Hand Function Assessment: cerebral Palsy, Stroke, Occupational Therapy (OT) - Part 1

HAND FUNCTION - 1

More Detail Information about Hand Function Assessment Therapy:
IN-HAND MANIPULATION

This is a brief introduction about one of the facets of hand function, which describes inhand manipulation

In-hand manipulation skills seem to be the most complex
of all fine motor skills.

In-hand manipulation involves the adjustment of objects by movements of the fingers so that the objects are more appropriately placed within the hand for the task to be accomplished

In-hand manipulation occurs within one hand.

Five basic types of in-hand manipulation skills have been described

1. Finger-to-palm translation: Movement of an object
from the fingers to the palm

2. Palm-to-finger translation: Movement of an object
from the palm to the finger pads

3. Shift: Slight adjustment of the object on or by the
finger pads

4. Simple rotation: Turning or rolling the object 90
degrees or less, with the fingers acting as a unit

5. Complex rotation: Turning an object over (turning
it 90 to 360 degrees) using isolated finger and
thumb movements

Each of the in-hand manipulation skills may occur
with no other object in the hand at the time of the
manipulation

Although almost any child with a disability that affects
motor or sensory functioning has difficulty with inhand
manipulation skills, not all of these children are
candidates for intervention for in-hand manipulation
problems.

In general, in-hand manipulation activities are realistic
only for children who have mild motor disabilities;
most children with moderate disabilities lack the ability
to use adequate grasp patterns and lack the associated
intrinsic muscle control to make in-hand manipulation
skills possible.
